As we approach the end of the year, it's a great time to consider your coverage.

As a busy dentist, you likely don’t think about your malpractice insurance very often. You know it’s there if you need it.
But is it up to date? Does it correctly reflect your practice and the services you offer?
If not, you run the risk of coverage gaps. The middle of a malpractice allegation is not the time to learn your coverage falls short. Instead, make sure your malpractice insurance policy reflects the latest information about your dental practice. It’s a condition of your coverage and helps ensure that you are properly insured.
Here are a couple different ways to approach this.
1. Complete a Yearly Review
It’s a good idea to review your malpractice insurance policy with your agent once a year. Some dentists like to take care of it at the start of each year, while others prefer to evaluate their insurance needs and limits just before their policy renewal date.
Choose the timing that works best for you.
2. Notify Your Agent When Changes Occur
Your practice will change over time. Depending on the type of change, your coverage and/or rates may be affected. To make sure your coverage keeps up with your practice, call or email your agent when any of the following happens:
- Updates in the practice mailing address
- Changes or additions in practice location
- Changes in practice scope
- Specific procedures are added or discontinued
- A legal entity is formed
- Dentists join or leave the practice
- Your full- or part-time status changes
While this list is a good start, there may be other situations when it’s important to contact your agent. So, keep in touch and don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions or something changes. The goal is to keep you and your practice protected.
