The term “Red Flag” is used to symbolize signs or symptoms that need urgent attention. Therefore, it is fitting that in an effort to bring attention and recognition to prescription drug abuse, The Ohio State Medical Board has created a one page guideline of Red Flag signs identifying abuse.
The guideline has an easy to use format that focuses on the following three steps: look, listen and check. The model can be used by any state and any healthcare provider.
As of December 2014, 49 States and DC have established prescription drug monitoring programs to address this form of abuse. For more information about the drug monitoring program in your state, visit the ‘State Programs’ portion of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website.
